On Monday, Japan’s stock market experienced a downturn, with the Nikkei 225 index closing lower by 0.24%. Losses in the Marine Transport, Insurance, and Communication sectors contributed to the overall decline in shares.
At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 stood at a decrease of 0.24%.
Among the top performers on the Nikkei 225 during the session were Olympus Corp. (TYO:7733), witnessing a notable surge of 9.65% or 221.00 points to reach 2,510.00 at the close. Similarly, Toray Industries, Inc. (TYO:3402) displayed robust performance, advancing by 8.67% or 62.40 points to finish at 781.80, while Minebea Mitsumi Inc (TYO:6479) climbed by 5.91% or 178.00 points to 3,190.00 during late trade.
Conversely, some of the session’s weakest performers included Shimizu Corp. (TYO:1803), marking a significant decline of 8.90% or 92.70 points to close at 949.30. Taisei Corp. (TYO:1801) also experienced a notable downturn, dropping by 8.12% or 487.00 points to settle at 5,512.00, while Secom Co., Ltd. (TYO:9735) recorded a decrease of 7.87% or 844.00 points, ending at 9,886.00.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 1962 stocks registering gains compared to 1711 stocks that witnessed declines, while 208 stocks remained unchanged.
Notably, shares in Olympus Corp. (TYO:7733) and Minebea Mitsumi Inc (TYO:6479) surged to their respective 52-week highs during the session.
The Nikkei Volatility index, which gauges the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, experienced a rise of 3.54% to reach 19.88.
In commodities trading, crude oil for June delivery experienced a slight decline of 0.12% to $78.17 per barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in July also dipped by 0.16% to $82.66 per barrel. Additionally, the June Gold Futures contract witnessed a decrease of 0.71%, trading at $2,358.20 per troy ounce.
In currency markets, the USD/JPY pair saw a marginal increase of 0.07% to 155.84, while the EUR/JPY pair rose by 0.10% to 167.90.
The US Dollar Index Futures remained unchanged at 105.18%.
