Japan Stocks Lower at Close of Trade; Nikkei 225 Down 1.27%

May 24, 2024 – Japan stocks closed lower on Friday, with losses in the Shipbuilding, Steel, and Gas & Water sectors leading shares downward.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 fell by 1.27%.

Among the session’s top performers on the Nikkei 225 were Fujikura Ltd. (TYO:5803), which rose by 4.88% or 149.00 points to reach 3,205.00 at the close. Shiseido Co., Ltd. (TYO:4911) added 4.22% or 203.00 points, ending at 5,018.00, while DIC Corp (TYO:4631) climbed 3.82% or 121.00 points to 3,292.00 in late trade.

On the flip side, the session’s worst performers included Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TYO:6504), which fell by 11.19% or 1,110.00 points to trade at 8,814.00 at the close. Lasertec Corp (TYO:6920) declined by 4.49% or 2,040.00 points, closing at 43,430.00, and Advantest Corp. (TYO:6857) dropped by 4.48% or 262.00 points to 5,591.00.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2189 to 1416, with 268 ending unchanged.

Shares in Fujikura Ltd. (TYO:5803) reached all-time highs, up by 4.88% or 149.00 to 3,205.00. DIC Corp (TYO:4631) also hit 52-week highs, rising by 3.82% or 121.00 to 3,292.00.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, remained unchanged at 17.11%.

In commodities trading, crude oil for July delivery rose by 0.01% or 0.01 to $76.88 a barrel. Brent oil for delivery in July rose by 0.06% or 0.05 to hit $81.41 a barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract rose by 0.02% or 0.55 to trade at $2,337.75 a troy ounce.

The USD/JPY pair was up by 0.09% to 157.07, while EUR/JPY rose by 0.10% to 169.89.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down by 0.06% at 104.97.
