Japan Stocks Lower at Close; Nikkei 225 Down 0.22%

Japanese stocks closed lower on Friday, with the Nikkei 225 index falling 0.22%. The decline was driven by losses in the shipbuilding, insurance, and banking sectors.

The top performers on the Nikkei 225 included Lasertec Corp (TYO:6920), which surged 4.87% or 1,680 points to close at 36,200.00. Nitto Denko Co (TYO:6988) also saw gains, rising 4.73% or 555 points to end at 12,300.00, and J.Front Retailing Co., Ltd. (TYO:3086) increased by 3.54% or 56 points to finish at 1,639.50.

On the other hand, Shionogi & Co., Ltd. (TYO:4507) was the worst performer, plummeting 12.91% or 934 points to close at 6,301.00. Keisei Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (TYO:9009) dropped 3.56% or 202 points to 5,473.00, while Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503) fell 3.08% or 89 points to 2,799.00.

Market breadth was positive, with 2,046 stocks advancing and 1,513 declining on the Tokyo Stock Exchange; 296 stocks remained unchanged.

The Nikkei Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, rose 3.62% to 17.77.

In commodities trading, crude oil for July delivery edged up 0.12% or 9 cents to $75.64 a barrel. Brent oil for August delivery increased 0.09% or 7 cents to $79.94 a barrel, while August gold futures rose 0.06% or $1.55 to $2,392.45 per troy ounce.

In currency markets, the USD/JPY pair decreased by 0.23% to 155.24, and the EUR/JPY pair fell 0.24% to 169.06. The US Dollar Index Futures was slightly down by 0.01% at 104.04.
