Nvidia has significantly increased its hiring in China, adding approximately 200 new employees this year, with a specific focus on advancing its research capabilities and developing new autonomous driving technologies. This expansion is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the burgeoning AI-driven automotive sector.
As of this year, Nvidia now has close to 600 employees based in Beijing and has recently opened a new office in the Zhongguancun tech hub, a well-known center for technological innovation in China. The company’s increased presence in China reflects its commitment to enhancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving technologies, which are expected to play a key role in the future of transportation.
Nvidia, a leader in AI chipmaking, employed approximately 29,600 people across 36 countries by the end of fiscal year 2024, as reported in a filing published in February. However, despite the growth in its workforce, the company did not comment on the details of the Bloomberg report.
In addition to its expansion in China, Nvidia is currently under investigation by Chinese authorities for potential violations of the country’s anti-monopoly laws. This investigation is widely perceived as a retaliatory measure in response to the U.S. government’s recent curbs on the Chinese chip industry, which have placed pressure on the country’s semiconductor sector.
Nvidia’s business in China has faced some challenges in recent years. China accounted for approximately 17% of Nvidia’s total revenue for the fiscal year ending in January, a noticeable decline from 26% two years prior. Despite this, Nvidia continues to invest in its Chinese operations, seeing the region as a critical market for its AI and automotive initiatives.
