In a distressing development, Russia conducted an overnight drone strike on the Kremenchuk oil refinery situated in Ukraine’s central Poltava region, igniting a fire, according to Governor Dmytro Lunin’s announcement on Wednesday.
Governor Lunin relayed that refinery operations have been temporarily suspended due to the attack, as communicated via the Telegram messaging app. He further added that there is currently no available information regarding casualties resulting from the incident.
The governor remarked, “Last night, Russians launched repeated assaults on the Poltava region. Our air defense system effectively intercepted the enemy’s unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).”
It is worth noting that this is not the first time the Kremenchuk oil refinery has come under attack from Russia, a pattern that has persisted since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
Ukraine’s military has reported the successful interception of 17 out of 24 drones that Russia deployed during the overnight assault. However, as of now, Reuters has been unable to independently corroborate this report.
This incident underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the continued security concerns faced by Ukraine.
