Is Crude Oil a Hazardous Chemical?

Crude oil is a dangerous chemical. In the “List of Hazardous Chemicals” (2002 edition), the dangerous goods number is: 32003. Crude oil is unprocessed petroleum . It is dark brown with green fluorescence and has a special odor. It is a mixture of various liquid hydrocarbons, such as alkanes, naphthenes, aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins.


The main components of crude oil are carbon and hydrogen, accounting for 83-87% and 11-14% respectively; there are also a small amount of sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen and trace elements, such as phosphorus, arsenic, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, nickel, iron and vanadium.

On October 27, 2017, the list of carcinogens published by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer was preliminarily sorted out for reference, and crude oil was included in the list of Category III carcinogens.
