What is the difference between petroleum and petrochemical?

The difference between petroleum and petrochemical:

  1. Substantially different

The substance of oil: Oil is one of the main objects of geological exploration, a viscous dark brown liquid called “the blood of industry”. Oil is stored in the upper part of the earth’s crust.

The essence of petrochemical: petrochemical refers to the petrochemical industry, generally refers to the chemical industry that uses oil and natural gas as raw materials.

Second, the application range is different

Scope of application of petroleum: There are two theories about the mechanism of petroleum formation: biological sedimentation into oil and petrochemical oil. The former is widely accepted. It is believed that oil is formed by long-term evolution of organisms in ancient oceans or lakes, and it belongs to biological deposits to form oil and is not renewable. Petroleum is mainly used as fuel and gasoline . It is also the raw material for many chemical industry products such as solutions, fertilizers, pesticides and plastics.

Application scope of petrochemical: There is a wide variety of products and a wide range. Crude oil undergoes cracking (cracking), reforming and separation to provide basic feedstocks such as ethylene, propylene, butene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, etc. Various basic organic raw materials such as methanol, formaldehyde, ethanol, acetaldehyde, acetic acid, isopropanol, acetone, phenol, etc. can be prepared from these basic raw materials.

  1. Different ingredients and raw materials

Component raw materials of petroleum: The main raw materials of petroleum are mixtures of various alkanes, naphthenes and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Petrochemical component feedstocks: alkynes, olefins, aromatics and syngas. From these basic raw materials, various important organic chemical products and synthetic materials of natural gas chemical industry can be prepared.
