Japanese Stocks Close Lower; Nikkei 225 Drops by 0.49%

Japanese stocks experienced a downturn at the close of Wednesday’s trading session, with losses predominantly observed in the Paper & Pulp, Pharmaceutical Industry, and Retail sectors.

At the conclusion of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index retreated by 0.49%.

Among the notable gainers on the Nikkei 225 were Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:9531), which surged by 5.12% or 182.00 points to reach 3,738.00 by the session’s end. Similarly, Japan Steel Works Ltd (TYO:5631) saw an increase of 4.03% or 145.00 points, closing at 3,744.00, while Teijin Ltd. (TYO:3401) advanced by 3.81% or 55.00 points, settling at 1,501.00 in late trading.

Conversely, the session witnessed declines for IHI Corp. (TYO:7013), which fell by 5.44% or 216.00 points to 3,766.00 at the close. Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4519) recorded a decrease of 3.00% or 162.00 points, concluding at 5,222.00, while CyberAgent Inc (TYO:4751) experienced a drop of 2.75% or 30.00 points, closing at 1,059.50.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, rising stocks outnumbered declining ones, with 1904 shares registering gains, 1697 shares recording losses, and 270 ending unchanged.

Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:9531) reached a 5-year high, surging by 5.12% or 182.00 points to 3,738.00, while Japan Steel Works Ltd (TYO:5631) hit a 52-week high, rising by 4.03% or 145.00 points to 3,744.00.

The Nikkei Volatility, reflecting the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, declined by 1.12% to 21.24.

In commodities trading, crude oil for May delivery climbed by 0.33% or 0.28 to $85.51 per barrel. Brent oil for delivery in June rose by 0.31% or 0.28 to $89.70 per barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract increased by 0.59% or 13.95 to trade at $2,376.35 per troy ounce.

The USD/JPY pair edged up by 0.02% to 151.80, while the EUR/JPY pair fell by 0.05% to 164.70.

The US Dollar Index Futures remained unchanged at 103.93.
