The S&P 500 will see three new additions on September 23, with Palantir Technologies (PLTR), Dell Technologies (DELL), and Erie Indemnity Co. (ERIE) replacing three current components.
Palantir, a leader in data analytics, has surged nearly 77% this year, driven by its work with big data and AI applications. Dell, known for its high-end servers and AI capabilities, has risen 33% in 2024, bolstered by its 2016 EMC acquisition. Erie Indemnity, a smaller but profitable insurance company, has seen its shares climb 47.6% this year.
The departing stocks include American Airlines Group (AAL), Etsy (ETSY), and Bio-Rad Laboratories (BIO). American Airlines, struggling with a 21% drop this year, is being replaced due to ongoing recovery challenges from the pandemic. Etsy and Bio-Rad, both of which have experienced significant declines, are also being removed. American Airlines will join the S&P MidCap 400, while Bio-Rad and Etsy will transition to smaller indices.
