U.S. Stocks Close Lower, Dow Jones Drops 0.97% as Sectors Weigh on Markets

U.S. stocks ended lower on Monday, with significant losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials, and Healthcare sectors leading the decline.

At the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.97%, the S&P 500 dropped 1.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite declined 1.21%.

Sector Performance and Key Stock Movements

Among the top performers on the Dow, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) saw a modest increase of 0.35%, or 0.48 points, closing at 137.49. Conversely, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) slipped 0.38%, losing 1.96 points to settle at 508.04, while Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) dropped 0.46%, or 2.63 points, to close at 573.55.

The day’s biggest losses came from Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE), which fell 2.28%, or 1.74 points, to finish at 74.68. Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) declined 2.26%, losing 4.08 points to close at 176.64, and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) dropped 1.45%, or 2.45 points, to finish at 167.08.

On the S&P 500, Amentum Holdings LLC (NYSE: AMTM) surged 8.79%, closing at 22.28, followed by EQT Corporation (NYSE: EQT), which gained 5.12%, finishing at 46.59. Coterra Energy (NYSE: CTRA) rose 3.55%, closing at 25.52.

The worst performers on the S&P 500 included Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI), which dropped 4.07% to 30.68, ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ON), which lost 3.86%, closing at 63.46, and Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ: WBA), which fell 3.74% to 9.26.

NASDAQ Highlights and Lows

On the NASDAQ Composite, Energous Co. (NASDAQ: WATT) saw a dramatic 554.32% surge, closing at 2.65, while NXU Inc. (NASDAQ: NXU) rose 516.27% to finish at 1.50. MicroCloud Hologram (NASDAQ: HOLO) jumped 167.08%, closing at 6.41.

However, some stocks took a significant hit, including Intchains Group Ltd ADR (NASDAQ: ICG), which plummeted 60.34%, dropping to 3.70. ABPRO Holdings (NASDAQ: ABP) lost 52.56%, ending at 2.13, and Snow Lake Resources (NASDAQ: LITM) fell 41.56% to close at 0.94.

Market Breadth and Volatility

Declining stocks outpaced advancers on the NYSE, with 1,907 stocks falling compared to 898 advancing. On the NASDAQ, 2,081 stocks dropped while 1,228 rose, and 118 remained unchanged.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), which gauges market uncertainty, rose 9.09% to 17.40, indicating increased investor nervousness.

Commodity and Currency Markets

In commodities, Gold Futures for February delivery dropped 0.41%, or 10.66, to settle at $2,621.24 per ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for February delivery increased by 0.81%, or 0.57, closing at $71.17 per barrel. The March Brent Crude contract rose 0.43%, or 0.32, to trade at $74.11 per barrel.

In the currency markets, the EUR/USD pair remained steady, up 0.24% at 1.04, while the USD/JPY declined 0.64%, trading at 156.80. The US Dollar Index Futures edged up 0.08%, settling at 107.88.

Outlook

With losses across major sectors and rising volatility, market participants will likely keep an eye on upcoming economic data and corporate earnings reports to gauge the direction of the markets in the coming days.
