Taiwan Stocks Close Lower; Taiwan Weighted Index Falls 0.88%

Taiwan’s stock market closed lower on Friday, with losses in key sectors including Oil, Gas & Electricity, and Computers & Peripherals contributing to the negative performance. At the close of trading, the Taiwan Weighted Index dropped by 0.88%, reflecting a broad-based decline.

Sector Performance and Notable Movers

While the broader market faced setbacks, some individual stocks stood out with strong gains. Fortune Oriental Co Ltd (TW:2491) was the top performer of the session, surging 9.96% or 1.35 points, ending at 14.90. Similarly, AzureWave Technologies Inc (TW:3694) saw a notable increase of 9.95% or 5.60 points, closing at 61.90, reaching a 5-year high in the process. Market Breadth and Currency Movements

Falling stocks outnumbered advancers, though the specific ratio of declining versus rising stocks was not provided. In the currency markets, the USD/TWD rose by 0.06%, closing at 32.93, while the TWD/CNY remained unchanged, up 0.05% to 0.22.

Commodities and Currency Market Updates

In the commodities markets, crude oil for February delivery saw a modest rise of 0.16%, closing at $73.25 per barrel. Brent oil for March delivery also saw a slight increase of 0.11%, finishing at $76.01 per barrel. Meanwhile, February Gold Futures rose 0.18%, or $4.82, to settle at $2,673.82 per troy ounce.

In the foreign exchange markets, the US Dollar Index Futures dipped 0.21% to 108.98, signaling a slight weakening of the greenback.

Outlook

Despite the day’s losses, the gains from select stocks, particularly in technology and commodities, suggest ongoing volatility and mixed sentiment in Taiwan’s market. As global markets continue to navigate geopolitical and economic uncertainties, Taiwan’s equity performance will likely reflect broader trends in the Asian region. Investors will be watching closely for any developments in the tech sector, oil prices, and U.S. dollar movements.
