1 ton of gold
It is difficult to give an exact value for a ton of pure gold, but a current, and very approximate, figure would be £41,517,000.
An exact price is difficult to give because the price of the yellow metal, usually quoted in troy ounces, is constantly changing. Plus, to further complicate the calculation, there are three different measurements using the term ‘tons’.
In the United States, a ton is 2,000 pounds. Traditionally in the UK, a ton – or long ton, to differentiate it from a US ton – is 2,240 pounds. In Europe, and modern UK usage, a metric ‘tonne’ is 1,000 kilograms, or 2204.62 pounds. All the weighing methods for a ton are very close to each other and today in the UK the tonne, or metric ton, is most commonly used.
So, how much is one tonne of gold precious metal worth? A tonne, in 2021, would be priced at its highest over £46,000,000 and the lowest just under £39,000,000. To calculate the how much one tonne of gold would be worth, you can multiply the kilo gold price by 1,000 for a rough figure.
If the price of gold changes, multiply the price of gold on that day by one million to get the price per ton of gold on that day.
Knowing the weight and density of gold, its volume can be calculated according to the formula V=m/p, where V is the volume, M is the mass, and P is the density. The density of gold is 19.26g/cm³ (grams per cubic centimeter), one ton of gold is 1,000,000g, then the volume of one ton of gold is 1,000,000/19.26=51921 cubic centimeters = 0.051921 cubic meters. If it is regarded as a square, then its side length is about 37.3CM, which is equivalent to the size of a microwave oven. Gold is very dense, so while 1 ton feels big, it’s not particularly bulky.
